Product History
CGR3: The Complete Sha'ir's Handbook (1994), by Sam Witt, was the third book in the 'Campaign Guide Reference' series; it was published in April 1994.
Concluding the CGR Series. TSR stopped using module codes in 1994, but The Complete Sha'ir's Handbook is clearly the third book in the 'CGR' series. Like its predecessors, it combines the crunchy kits of the Complete PHBR series (1989-1995) with the background of a specific campaign world.
The world detailed in Sha'ir's Handbook is Al-Qadim . That line's trade dress is also obvious in this product, which includes the Al-Qadim endpapers and the line's use of a gold ink.
Unfortunately, this was the last book in the short-lived CGR line. It was also book two of five in Al-Qadim 's third and final year or production.
Expanding AD&D. The Complete Sha'ir's Handbook is essentially a setting-specific variant of PHBR4: The Complete Wizard's Handbook (1990). It includes new rules for Al-Qadim's unique wizards: the elementalist sorcerers, the elemental mages, and the jinn-related sha'ir.
Genres: Steampunk. The Complete Sha'ir's Handbook contains one of D&D's first looks at the steampunk genre, thanks to its inclusion of kits for clockwork mages and mechanicians.
Expanding Al-Qadim. Though The Complete Sha'ir's Handbook mostly focuses on crunchy kits and other rules, it also detailed the wizardly societies of Al-Qadim , including the Brotherhood of the True Flame and many others.
Wizardly societies were apparently in vogue at the time, as TSR had published DSR3: 'Veiled Alliance' (1992) for Dark Sun just a few years previous — though some reviewers thought such societies were better suited for Athas than the land of Al-Qadim .
About the Creators. Witt continued his casual freelancing for TSR in 1994, also coauthoring Forgotten Realms Book of Lairs (1994) that year. In 1995, he'd additionally begin working with FASA.
